So, my daughter was sent home yesterday with a 102 degree fever. She had also complained to the school nurse about having a headache and backache. My younger daughter was also sent home so that way I could monitor both at the same time and take them both to the doctor if need be. The doctor’s office said yesterday not to bring them in… but today I took them because my younger one had developed a pretty bad cough. Needless to say, the pediatrician confirmed that they both have it and ordered us Tamiflu at the local pharmacy. Now, not even 8 hours after their doctor’s visit, they’re running around the house like crazy. They’ve only had one dose of Tamiflu so far. I’ve heard that some people are having mild symptoms, but they seemed to make too fast of a turnaround for them to really have this. I have yet to hear of anyone feeling better in less than 24 hours. Don’t get me wrong… it’s wonderful that they feel this way, I hate to see them sick. But has anyone else here had the flu or has had children/loved ones have it and bounce back so quickly? The doctor wants to hear back from me tomorrow. My biggest fear is that doctors are too quick to say it’s H1N1 because it’s so widespread, but if this isn’t what my daughters really have then we’ve jumped the gun and wasted 2 orders of Tamiflu… and what if this isn’t it and they really do get it in the next month or so? Will the Tamiflu still work?
Symptoms of my children include:
My oldest is 8: She had 102 degree fever, was lethargic, and had headache and backache.
My youngest is 6: She had no fever, mild sniffling, and today had a cough that sounded really rattled.
Now neither one of them has any symptoms…. which is very strange to me… if it’s H1N1….
Most states are no longer testing for H1N1. It is possible that they do have the virus. It’s awesome that they are feeling better. I don’t know how well antivirals work if you need to use them again in a month – but you could always ask your doctor. Hopefully that wouldn’t be a problem if it turns out that your children just had a cold.
When I was 10 years old, I had pneumonia and was coughing up small amounts of blood. I was still sent to school and ran around and played during recess – until my teacher made me come back into the classroom to rest since I l was so pale and my forehead was hot. Then she called my mom and said that she thought I should be seen by a doctor.
My daughter had pneumonia as well a couple years ago, and while she wasn’t running around like I was when I was 10 years old (she was limp actually) she did want to run around 2 days after her antibiotics.
I think sometimes kids just don’t like to take the time to take it easy.
did they swab their noses and test it? -my son had to be tested for the flu a couple months ago. and that is how they did it.
there has been talk of doctors not even testing for it and diagnosing it anyways.
H1N1 is still a strain of flu. tamiflu treats most of the symptoms of any flu; the fever, aches, etc.
usually tamaflu takes awhile to kick in; a day or so
but keep in mind, ur daughters are kids; if they feel better, even a little, theyll find the energy to run around the house and play.
go to the doctor tomorrow and see what he says; after all, doctors DO have a better idea of what they’re talking about than us average citizens.
no need to deal with the if’s. after all, they are only if’s, and are not going to do anything but stress you; and with two children sick, thats one of the things you want to avoid.
they probably have symptoms; but youknow kids. if they want to play, theyll play, and they wont notice how theyre feeling until afterwards.
dont worry. h1n1 isnt that big of a deal. its good that your’e aware that it IS an ‘epidemic’ but there is not much to fear from it than from any other strain of flu.
dont worry; im sure your daughters will b up and running and back on full throttle in a few days
