H1n1 – Neg Test But Doc Says Still Have It And No Fever?

Son is 11 years old
Took son to doc. negative influ. A test but doc says he has it. and treating with Tamiflu. H1n1 is a panademic in our county also. Kids in his school have it. But he has no fever. He had a headache that would not ago away, stomache, slight sore throat and a backache.
He has asthma and right now it is really bad.
But he is acting normal. He looks tired. But just takes naps here and there. Up walking around eating etc.
What I want to know is
Has anyone heard of someone having H1N1 with no fever and with minor symptoms. I am confused.

    Definitely.
As with seasonal influenza, H1N1 influenza does not produce a fever in everyone. Most people, but by no means all
And most of the tests that are done in-house to test for Influenza A do not always catch every case….there are false positives. Your doc was absolutely right to assume positive and, in your son’s case (asthma) treat him with Tamiflu right away.
Most people who get H1N1 will have mild symptoms. So what you have described is not uncommon!
    Hope this helps

I guess it is possible to not have a fever. The test for H1N1 is only 49% accurate with a lot of false negatives being reported.
As long as he is napping and acting some what like himself, I would not worry. Since he has asthma watch his breathing. Any trouble breathing he will need to go to doctor again.

yes I have heard of cases with no fever starting in Mexico last April.
Here’s a list of links with info on H1N1 without fever.http://www.bing.com/search?q=h1n1+no+fev…
    hope he’s feeling better soon

Yes that is all possible. Everyone is different (body chemistry, constitution, etc)
The test the doctors give are kind of like a pregnancy test you buy at the pharmacy. They are accurate some of the time.
In order to be “confirmed” the Doctor has to send the a culture to CDC. This takes several days to turn around. However, due to the wide spread panic I don’t think they are even giving that test anymore because of the lack of resources and the demand.
So basically, anyone that comes into the hospital with symptoms is being told that have the flu.
Having asthma puts your son in a “special population”. That designation should put him at the top of the list for the vaccine.
If he’s feeling well- that is a good sign. Keep treating as directed and watch the fever and other symptoms. If he starts getting worse get him to the Doctor or ER.
The site I attached is very helpful with information and do’s and don’ts.
