My school is planning a date where all the students and faculty can get the the swine flu shot for free if they chose to.
But the problem is that my mom and I can’t decide if I should get it or not.
A brief look at my medical history:
-Allergies: Penecillin, Amoxicillin, tree nuts, seafood, and seasonal allergies.
-Asthma
-Possible auto-immune thyroid thing
-sebborichic dermititus
And I sometimes get sick whenever I get shots, but not too bad. It seems like 1/4 the school is out sick with flu-like symptoms, so I’m terrified that I could get the H1N1 Virus, since I’ve heard it really hits kids with asthma hard. But the vaccine seems so new, and I heard they are all made overseas in China, so who knows how safe they are?
My mom said she would feel better if I got the non-active (dead) injection, but since it is my body, the final choice is up to me. (What, could they just sit on me why they stick a needle in my arm?!)
Should I get the shot?
Yes, it’s perfectly safe.
The virus are all dead, it’s only marker proteins that your immune system reacts to.
It’s not that big of a deal. Get the non-active shot, experience systemic reactions for a day or two (general feeling like crap) and you’ll be fine.
Your age also comes into question. Puberty or post-puberty, your immune system has developed to the point where you could probably fight off H1N1 on your own at the light cost of feeling like crap for a week or so. Obtain immunity now before the virus mutates into something worse.
If you have a compromised immune system you need to get it. I have a thyroid problem I plan to get it.
Getting sick with a compromised immune system is dangerous to you and can effect those around you.
Getting sick from a shot goes away a lot faster then this flue.
You should take the advice of your doc on this one. They certainly can’t force you to get the vaccine, but if you choose to, it sounds like the dead injection is the better choice for you.
I would suggest getting it because you have asthma.
I’m pretty sure you would have to get it as a shot… the CDC says that people with asthma or reactive airway diseases should not get the nasal vaccine.
Getting a shot isn’t fun but it only lasts a minute… close your eyes or look away while they do it. Think of something really happy or fun. Ask if a friend can go with you and tell you dumb jokes so you are distracted.
Some of the vaccine could be made in China, but not all of it is. I know (from reading news articles) that some of the vaccine has been made in Pennsylvania and other US states and some in Switzerland. There are quality standards that have to be met regardless of where it is made so I would not worry about whether or not its made in China.
I am waiting, waiting, waiting for my doctor to get the vaccine in because there is a shortage where I live. I want to get it ASAP because the alternative–getting sick, possibly being in the hospital (I have a lot of health problems)–really sucks.
If you decide not to get it, send it to me!
