It’s a hormone secreted from the pineal gland in our brain. Thought to help our bodies’ sleep-wake cycle i.e when it’s time to go to sleep and when it’s time to wake up. Melatonin decreases the time it takes to fall asleep (“sleep latency”), and may increase the duration of sleep.

Melatonin Fast Facts

The most popular natural sleep aid for helping adults with jet lag or effects of shift work Also popularly used as a sleep aid for children, more than 20 studies have shown that melatonin helps children with insomnia to fall asleep quickly Side effects: daytime drowsiness headaches, dizziness, a “heavy-head” feeling, stomach discomfort Safe with short-term use (three months or less) as concluded by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (2005) Dosage should not exceed 3 milligrams and it’s not recommended by healthcare professionals to give to kids younger than 10. Being a popular OTC sleep aid, pharmaceutical grade synthetic form is available in many brands; AVOID natural forms that are basically melatonin derived from animal’s pineal glands due to possible contamination It must be noted however, nearly all studies of melatonin were on “special needs” children i.e. autism, other development disabilities, blind. Their bodies either don’t produce melatonin or do so only erratically. 15% of pediatricians still recommend melatonin as a sleep aid for children with insomnia, according to the medical journal Pediatrics (2002)

Before Using Melatonin As A Children Sleep Aid: -discuss with your pediatrician to rule out medical reasons for insomnia, such as breathing difficulties or behavioral conditions such as attention-deficit disorder – parents should first try techniques to change the child’s sleep behavior

How Many Moms Have Gotten The H1n1 Vaccine For Themselves/their Children?

was wondering, despite my adamance in NOT getting the H1N1 shot for my kids, how many parents have? I’m going to say now-I’m caving, because we had to take my daughter (who’s six and in first grade) to the ER Thursday because she had “flu like symptoms” (Called the nurseline, they told me to bring her in) and a fever. She’s six. Luckily, she got checked out and has strep thraot and NOT swine flu,but I’d like to avoid that, and it’s a LOT worse than I thought it was going to get (how many people are getting it/have it) So I’m calling Monday to see about the vaccine for her, myself, and my husband. All because we have a 12 week old little boy,and the chances he’s more high risk for it,and could die easier from it. Does this make sense to anyone? Has anyone gotten the vaccines for themselves/kids,and what all effects have/are you seeing? I’m just curious, before I go jumping into something like this. I was just wondering, because we think we are all 3 going to get it now. It’s strange how one little event can make you jump so quickly to do something you were adamant about NOT doing.
Before someone says anything,it’s made like all vaccinations-EVERY VACCINATION MADE has a mostly dead strain of the virus in it. Research it. I say this b/c I’ve asked this in a few sections, because it’s something I’m really wondering. I know that it’s made like all vaccines, with a mostly dead strain of a virus. I know the risk of both. It’s a damned if you do and damned if you don’t situation as a parent. They are running short on tamiflu (the treatment for swine flu) in a lot of areas, which is what’s making me think of doing it this way.

I Want A H1n1 Test For Children To Avoid Complications From Flu Shot.?

I believe my children and I are recovering from Swine Flu. We did see the Dr., but because we were not on deaths door step they said they didn’t think we had it. We did have all the symptoms-with the exception of near death or super high fevers (100.8 doesn’t count). Here is my problem. My children had reactions to the seasonal flu shot this year. My daughter’s arm-from the shoulder to above the elbow-swelled to several times its natural size. It became beet red and very hot. I do not want to give her a flu shot if she already has the antibodies. What is available to us? Is there a blood test to take that could possibly help us avoid an unnecessary vaccine?
I am not fond of the way Dr.’s are handling this flu. Obviously I am for vaccines-since we all had the seasonal shot this year. But I’m not for unnecessary risks. It seems they are really pushing the vaccine. It also seems to me the recorded number of H1N1 cases must be severely under counted if the Dr.’s are only acknowledging cases on death’s door step.
How are parents to make educated decisions for their children when the medical field restricts our knowledge and options?

Four Of My Children Have H1n1…?

Hi all…My 2 year old, 5 year old, 8 yr old and 12 year old all have H1N1. The doc tested my 5 year old for Influenza A and it was positive. She said that because the H1N1 test takes 4-5 days to get the results back, they are doing the Influenza A test and diagnosing that as a positive H1N1 diagonosis. She put my 12 yr old on Tamaflu because he has Asthma and my 2 year old also (becuase he’s so young). Anyway, here’s my question….
Last Saturday (when all my kids were still well) I developed a sore throat and nasty dry cough. I was tired and had a headache. NO Fever. Since I had no fever I thought well, it’s prob just a nasty cold and so sudafed, rest and fluids would do the trick. I never did have a fever but truly felt like crap. I still have a cough 5 days later and keep getting headaches. I’m tired a lot of the time but I have also been taking care of 4 sick kids. My 15 year old hasn’t gotten it yet, my husband is fine also.
So what do ya’ll think? Did I bring H1N1 home? Even though I had no fever? My childrens elementary school has had over 100 absenses every day this week with flu like symptoms…personally I think they should shut the school down. BTW, I live in Northwest Ohio. Thanks in advance for any insight :o )

H1n1 And Children… Have Any Of Your Children Had It?

So, my daughter was sent home yesterday with a 102 degree fever. She had also complained to the school nurse about having a headache and backache. My younger daughter was also sent home so that way I could monitor both at the same time and take them both to the doctor if need be. The doctor’s office said yesterday not to bring them in… but today I took them because my younger one had developed a pretty bad cough. Needless to say, the pediatrician confirmed that they both have it and ordered us Tamiflu at the local pharmacy. Now, not even 8 hours after their doctor’s visit, they’re running around the house like crazy. They’ve only had one dose of Tamiflu so far. I’ve heard that some people are having mild symptoms, but they seemed to make too fast of a turnaround for them to really have this. I have yet to hear of anyone feeling better in less than 24 hours. Don’t get me wrong… it’s wonderful that they feel this way, I hate to see them sick. But has anyone else here had the flu or has had children/loved ones have it and bounce back so quickly? The doctor wants to hear back from me tomorrow. My biggest fear is that doctors are too quick to say it’s H1N1 because it’s so widespread, but if this isn’t what my daughters really have then we’ve jumped the gun and wasted 2 orders of Tamiflu… and what if this isn’t it and they really do get it in the next month or so? Will the Tamiflu still work?
Symptoms of my children include:
My oldest is 8: She had 102 degree fever, was lethargic, and had headache and backache.
My youngest is 6: She had no fever, mild sniffling, and today had a cough that sounded really rattled.
Now neither one of them has any symptoms…. which is very strange to me… if it’s H1N1….

Parents Whose Children Have Already Gotten The H1n1 Vaccine…?

I want to get my daughter the vaccine, because a little girl in my town just died from it 3 days ago. Just have a couple of questions…
What day did your child get the vaccine?
Have they shown any adverse symptoms or side effects?
Thank you very, very much.
