5 Proven Herbs For Menopause – Do They Really Help?

You’ve heard there are natural herbs for menopause that can really help: Yet during a recent survey, most women could only name 2 or 3 at most. And most sites that feature information don’t seem to take into account one vital factor – whether or not the menopause symptom alleviating effects have been scientifically tested and proven.

So where’s the proof? Which herbs do help combat the effects of menopause? Which should you take?

The latter is a decision only you can make, based on your own personal symptoms, problems and concerns (not to mention allergies, too)! But it helps if you know the basics about each herb popularly used in supplements to alleviate menopause symptoms and side effects.

Here is some concrete information about five particularly effective herbs for menopause; what they are, how they work and what they do…

1. Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa, Cimicifuga racemosa)

What Is It? – Belonging to the buttercup family, this hardy perennial herb grows wild across North America.
Parts Used? – Rhizomes and roots.
Existence of Formal Studies? – Yes. Numerous. According to one performed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, “black cohosh may be helpful in the short term (6 months or less) for women with vasomotor symptoms of menopause.”
Adverse Effects? – Adverse effects have been reported under rare circumstances, particularly where recommended dosage has been exceeded. Should never be combined with – or confused with – Blue Cohosh, a proven abortifactant.

2. Chasteberry (Vitex agnus castus)

What Is It? – Fruit of the Chaste tree. Inhibits prolactin release and binds to dopamine receptors.
Parts Used? – Fruit
Existence of Formal Studies? – Yes, multiple. A significant study implemented by R. Schellenberg of Germany’s Institute for Health Care and Science noted a “50% reduction in symptoms” in the active group of a double-blind study involving 178.
Strengths – Often used with success by PMS sufferers, it helps in combating mood swings. Anti inflammatory properties. Relieves bloating.
Adverse Effects? – Can cause mild nausea and digestive irritation, so it is best used in enterically-coated capsules. (Reported by 7 women out of Schellenberg’s group of 178.).

3. Damiana (Turnera diffusa, Turnera aphrodisiaca)

What Is It? – South American shrub
Parts Used? – Leaves and stems
Existence of Formal Studies? – Double blind controlled studies performed by the University of Hawaii School of Medicine in 1998 and again in 2002. 75% improvement noted in both study groups in its female participants’ sexual libido.
Strengths – Increases female libido, reduces vaginal dryness.

Parts Used? – Isoflavones extracted
Existence of Formal Studies? – Yes. 16 major studies, at last count. A typical result is that found by Barentsen and Van de Weijer of Universiteit Medical Centre in Amsterdam (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology), citing “a significant reduction in hot flushes from baseline” in 44% of the active group in its double-blind study.
Strengths – Reducing “hot flashes”, night sweats, vaginal dryness, skin conditions.

Help! I Believe My Niece Has H1n1?

My niece is 8 years old and about 5 days ago she got the H1N1 shot. The very next day she started feeling ill with a bad headache and soar throat. This continued for about 3 days and on the third day she started a fever. My sister monitored her during the night and at one point my niece woke up and started to have the shivers. My sister brought her in her bed to temp to warm her up but then her fever went sky high and she started to vomit. My sister decided to bring her to the emergency and the nurse told my sister that it was too expensive to test for the H1N1 and decided only to swab my niece for strep throat and gave her some Tylenol and then sent them home. The very next day, my niece started to vomit again during the night and had a very high fever once again so my sister brought her to the emerg. Then the doctor diagnosed that my niece has secondary pneumonia gave her antibiotics and sent her home.
My problem is the hospital where my sister is located. The doctor still hasn’t tested my niece for H1N1 since THEY say its too expensive to test and that their location isnt at big risk which is BULL and the doctor told my sister that he’s glad that she gave my niece the H1N1 shot since it could have turned into h1n1.. After doing research on the internet, it seems like my niece has all the symptoms to the swine flu. What do you think about this?

Did I Get H1n1? Or Regular Season Flu? Confused!!! Please Help?

So 4 weeks ago I got my regular season flu shot… I was gonna get my H1N1 shot tomorrow, but over the weekend I came down with flu like symptoms and was diagnosed with “Influenza A”, doctor assumed it was H1N1 since I got my flu shot for seasonal already. But instead of being sick like a dog for 2 weeks like my friends with H1N1, I recovered in 2 days!!! (Thank God!!)
I heard that if you got the seasonal flu shot, you can still get sick with the seasonal flu, but a minor version (like the one I had) of the flu. What do you guys think? How can I know for sure?
I am asking because I am wondering if I should still go ahead with the H1N1 vaccine now that I got this flu… THANKS!!

I Am Really Scared About H1n1! Help Me!?

This girl in my school (lets call her Mallory) has H1N1 (or otherwise known as swine as you all must know) And my best friend( Lets call her Cheya) sits in her desk for one class. Today (before we found out that Mallory had H1N1), Cheya had a terrible headache so she put her head on the desk. After we found out that Mallory had H1N1, We got to go home early, so we were driving a little kid home and we passed Mallory’s house. And we saw an EMS truck… Thats when Cheya really started freaking out… When we got to Cheya’s place we immedeatly started dissenfecting. She also said she had all the symptoms like diarreah, headaches, sorethroats… stuff like that… But I really wanna know If I’m overreacting…

I Am Afraid I Might Have H1n1 – Help!!?

I have been feeling bad for about two weeks. It started off with just a cough, then the cough got deeper into my chest like bronchitis, and then I got a fever and started shaking.
I feel horrible and I thought a nice hot shower would help… it did help a little with my congestion, but when I got out of the shower and was toweling off in front of the mirror, I became very concerned I may have The Swine Flu!
I took a snapshot and I am hoping that someone might be able to tell me with the symptoms I just described and the photo, if I have H1N1 (Swine Flu).
Thanks ahead of time and I really hope that its not as bad as it looks.

Is It Swine Flu/h1n1? Help!?

Okay – Last night I had a really bad headache, but it went away after taking an Advil. But when I woke up my left eye was very red. It’s been red all day and it has just now started to hurt like a bruise whenever I blink. I’ve heard that red eye(s) can be a symptom of Swine Flu/H1N1. Is that true? Do I have it or is there just something wrong with my eye?
Thanks!
