What is the standard things they do during your first gynecology exam and what should I expect during
Pelvic exam?
Breast exam?
Do they do a rectal exam on the first one?
Pap smear?
Birth Control Discussion?
what should I expect for each of these?
Pelvic & brest exam. Pap smear (depending how old you are). Expect a TON of uncomfortable questions such as “are you sexually active”? No rectal exams… those are for guys only.
I was 17 when I went to my first GYN appointment. I was having sex but my mom didn’t know. So I went in by myself. I told the GYN I was sexually active and that my parents didn’t know. She counseled me in safe sex practices and then she prescribed me a birth-control pill, and she told my mom the pill was because I had bad PMS and acne.
My mom believed the doctor.
Well for your first visit to the gynecologist, they’ll do a pelvic exam, breast, exam, and pap smear. Usually they don’t do rectal exams, but that would depend on your doctor. When you get there, they’ll take you in the examination room and ask you questions about your menstrual cycle, sexual activity, etc. If you want birth control pills, this is your time to ask. After that, you’ll be given a paper gown and you’ll be left alone. You’ll remove all clothes, including bra and underwear. The doctor will come in when your finished. You’ll lie on your back on the table, and the doctor will help guide your feet into two stirrups. This is just to comfortably separate your legs and knees for an easy access to the vagina. The doctor will drape a sheet over your bottom half, and ask you to scoot to the end of the table. For the breast exam, you’ll uncover that area. The doctor will move his fingers in a circular motion around the nipple. Then you’ll lift your arm back, and he’ll do this around your armpit. When both breasts are done, he’ll position a bright light on your vagina. Then, he’ll exam your vulva and exterior vagina for discoloration. He’ll then apply lube to a speculum which looks like a duck beak. The doctor will put one finger into your vagina to hold you open down there while he slides the speculum in. Once it’s in place, he’ll fully open it. Then he’ll take a long Q-Tip and scrape cells off your cervix walls and rub it onto a slide. This is to test for cancers. If you’re having sex, he’ll do another to test for STD’s. Then he’ll pull the speculum out while examing your cervix walls. Then he applies lube to two fingers and inserts them into your vagina. With his free hand, he’ll press down on your abdomen. This is to check that the size and position of your ovaries are correct. Then your done, unless your doctor examines your rectum. He’ll insert his finger into your rectum and feel around for any abnormalties. And that’s all. None of it is that bad, and doesn’t hurt at all. Just don’t be tense while the procedure is being done, because that can cause discomfort. If you relax, you should be fine!! Good luck
