I was vaccinated about 10 days ago and am starting to get feelings of a chest cold or virus. I have asthma and it is really starting to bother me. If work with people all day and many of them have had the swine flu. If I have contracted it is it still a serious flu for me? How long will this last if I have it and how will my symptoms be different then somebody who hadn’t taken the vaccine?
If you get exposed to H1N1 and have had a partial but not complete immune response to the vaccine, you typically will have milder symptoms. This is because your body has already been processing the viral antigens (from the vaccine) and making B (memory) lymphocytes and antibodies.
Basically your humoral immune response is already in high gear instead of starting from square one. Antibodies are what enable other immune cells to identify foreign antigens. Antibody binds to the foreign antigen (the virus in this case) and other immune cells then capture and destroy this complex.
Normally you would recover more quickly and experience fewer symptoms. It is still possible to have severe symptoms so you should still be prepared to seek medical treatment if necessary.
When I got my flu vaccination, I felt like total crap for a couple of days. The vaccination is just a weakend version of the virus, and you may feel sick for a short while. Don’t worry, it shouldn’t progress into anything more that that. If it does, go to the hospital. They’ll be able to fix you up there.
H1N1 is the exact same thing as the regular flu, it is no more dangerous or serious. Maybe you get a higher fever but that is all. If you have been vaccinated then you probably do not have it. Maybe you got a cold or something.
